My trips to Kmart used to be reserved for buying bulk packets of candy, getting Ollie Lego, and picking up those things I needed but didn’t want to spend too much cash on (stockings, undies and coat hangers).
But during my last few visits I’ve noticed Kmart has some pretty dope furniture for really cheap. I’m realising as I write this that my blog posts may give the impression that I’m a bona fide cheap skate. I’m not. I just really appreciate the way style has become democratised. You don’t need to earn the big bucks, or shop at elitist stores to ensure your living quarters are chic and remain in vogue.
I think the trick is to pick a few key Kmart pieces and distribute in your home sparingly, otherwise your house ends up looking like a cheap display home. You also need to surround the cheap things, with expensive, antique, or good quality things. For example, a healthy ratio would be 2 Kmart pillow covers ($10AUD) to 1 Marimekko ($79AUD). Let’s face it; they kind of look exactly the same….
I recently bought a Kmart painting and coupled with the expensive sheets Ollie bought me for Christmas, I don’t think it looks cheap or tacky. Two of my best friends also have the same painting and it works equally as well in their beautifully styled abode. I guess that is one problem, it’s a little hard to stay individual but hasn’t IKEA has already made this a non-issue?Who really cares, it just means you’re keeping company who have great style and appreciate a bargain.
My other favorite purchase: the rip-off Eames chair. Sleek and elegant, this chair (and Kmart) have helped me to achieve an aesthetically pleasing, modern outdoor environment.
Sure, I understand by paying less you are compromising on quality. I’m not bothered, by the time my Eames chair is on its last legs, I’ll have spotted a replacement replica to take its spot and transform our home.
Kmart makes any vibe easy to achieve. Recently I’ve tried to procure pink fur pillows and transform our house into a Kylie-Jenner esque love nest. Ollie is not keen on this. But that’s what I love about Kmart, it opens up a world of interior decorating to the mere pleb.
Big ups Kmart.
